Idle Relearn not working

Post by o2bfit »

Hello Tom,

My last computer (2009 MacBook Pro running bootcamp and Windows 8.1) died and has been replaced with a 2015 MacBook Pro running bootcamp and Windows 10.

I'm finding that the Idle Relearn is not applying to a 2004 V35 350GT. It attempts to apply but comes back with "ECU Busy" with a timer. The Data Display will also work for ~20secs before losing connectivity. All other functions appear to work OK. Everything including the idle relearn worked successfully on my old laptop with the same adaptor.

I've tried changing the offset and dropping the baud rate but to no success. The adaptor is a VAGCOM 409.1 with a clone FT232RL chipset (I found that out the hard way) that had drivers to work in Win7/8. The driver has been installed fine within Windows 10.

I have an old HP Windows 7 32bit laptop that I could use to test whether its a faulty adaptor although I'm reluctant to use up an install license.

Any thoughts?

Thanks
Tom

Does the ECU Busy timer keep counting or does it stop at some stage?
It could be that there is an issue and the relearn can not complete.

It usually keeps counting before eventually timing with "IAVL failed"

If I reset the "Clear Self Learn" then do the Idle Relearn, Datascan indicates it has completed the Idle Relearn but it actually hasn't

Thanks

Your problem is not with the driver, software or PC. It's the engine and how it's running. Something is not within the specs and the ECM can not complete the operation.
Service manual gives some pointers to what to look for:

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE
If idle air volume learning cannot be performed successfully, proceed as follows:
1. Check that throttle valve is fully closed.
2. Check PCV valve operation.
3. Check that downstream of throttle valve is free from air leakage.
4. When the above three items check out OK, engine component parts and their installation condition
are questionable. Check and eliminate the cause of the incident.
It is useful to perform EC-125, "TROUBLE DIAGNOSIS - SPECIFICATION VALUE" .
5. If any of the following conditions occur after the engine has started, eliminate the cause of the
incident and perform Idle air volume learning all over again:
Engine stalls.
Erroneous idle.
