The adaptor you are using is an ELM327 type adaptor. It will not work with the NDSII Windows PC software.
You need a VAG KKL or a VAG K+CAN adaptor.

The second adaptor from Amazon looks like the correct type.

Try the "Find ECU" function under Settings->Communication and see if you get any active ECUs.
Also try connecting from the OBDII tab.

Are you connecting with the engine running or just the ignition in ON position?

ECU id 40 is the the BCM. It's not the engine ECU. You should be able to connect from the BCM tab, this would prove the cable is working ok but that will not help you fix issues with your engine.

There must be some other issues preventing you from connecting to the ECM. The fact that you can find an ECU when the engine is off but not when the engine is running (I assume "key set to ON position" means engine running) would suggest you have issues with EMF noise interference. Is you engine grounded properly?

We can help you with the NDSII software but we can not guide you through every step on how to repair your car. The NDSII software is just another tool, not a replacement for a mechanic. If you feel this is beyond your skill level you should take the car to a qualified mechanic.

Have you tried connecting from the BCM tab with the ignition in OFF position, ON position, ON position and the engine running? Try all 3 conditions and let us know results for all 3. You need to prove that your cable and settings are correct by connecting to at least one ECU.

The debug log file is saved in the users Documents folder. The file will not contain much since there is no response from the ECM (which you have tested with the "Find ECU" function). The software can not tell you what is wrong with the ECU if it can't communicate with it.

You should have Adaptor Type set to Generic. Just double check that settings under Settings->Communication.

Check the grounding of your engine and the ECM. It's a common issue on old cars. As they say "Assumption is the mother of all f ups".

NDSIII will not work on your car. It's for cars that use CAN bus for diagnostics.

If you need to press the Connect button twice it's probably a timing problem. Try adjusting the "Ini Timer Offset" value. You should be able to find a setting that let you connect every time.

You will loose connection if you change tabs. So if you go from the ECM to a TCM tab this will drop connection from the ECM to get ready to establish connection to the BCM. If you go back to the ECM tab you will need to reconnect. You can only connect to one ECU at the time.

It depends on your PC. There is no one number that works for all. Try positive and negative values.
